Originally built as a vaudeville and silent film venue, the historic Alex
Theatre has served as the heart of the City of Glendale, California since
1925. The Alex was purchased by the City and today is run as a non-profit
501(c)(3) corporation. Part of the Alex's mission is to serve as an
education resource for Glendale and area communities.
The Poetic Generations Workshop is an afterschool and weekend free poetry
class that helps link a
diverse group of multi-generational Glendale area residents to each other
and to their unique
experiences. Last year, the program served 30 youth and 15 senior citizens
who worked together in a most unusual program!
Through poetry and the skills and elements necessary to write a poem,
students learn to focus their energies, observations, memories and personal
responses to the world. The result is that students develop their skills in
English, gain self-esteem and self-awareness. Poetry gives them the space
needed and enables students to capture language and to use it to speak out
loud. Each student has a unique voice. When they learn to speak with this
voice and to use poetry as a tool for knowledge and self-awareness, poetry
becomes the gift for greater achievement.
The program culminates with a free community performance of the poems at the historic Alex Theatre and the publication of an anthology free of charge to the entire community.
